What to look for in a Treatment
Center
"Addiction is a treatable disease. Discoveries in the
science of addiction have led to advances
in drug abuse treatment that help people stop abusing drugs
and resume their productive lives."*
"Treatment approaches must be tailored to address each
patient's drug abuse patterns and drug-related medical, psychiatric,
and social problems."*
*National Institute On Drug Abuse, Drugs,
Brains, and Behavior - The Science Of Addiction
Just as treatment of other diseases has advanced over the
past 50+ years, the treatment of addiction has evolved based
on scientific evidence. Treatment centers differ in their
strengths and approaches, and selecting the appropriate center
is an important aspect of giving the individual suffering
from the Disease of Addiction the best chance for recovery.
Some treatment centers treat only chemical dependency, others
specialize in treating chemical dependency along with co-occurring
mental health disorders (dual diagnosis). Treatment centers
are incorporating advances in psychotherapy such as cognitive
behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and new techniques
in individual and group therapy, and there are exciting advances
in neuroscience to directly treat the brain. More medications
are becoming available to aid in both detoxification and to
reduce cravings for alcohol and drugs. Most reputable treatment
centers incorporate spirituality into their programs. The
key is to find a treatment center that incorporates a variety
of services and treatment modalities into a comprehensive
treatment regimen.
